“ Are you going out like that?” , was a common question in my household while in my teenage years especially thrown at me by my older brother just before he would take me out to our local on a Saturday night. Looking back, I cringe at the clothes I donned on these nights and what I considered” sexy “ back then and realize that perhaps I really overdid it.
Fast forward into my adulthood, and I have come to learn that dressing sexy does not necessary make me sexy. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder ( or in some cases the BEER holder ), sexiness on the other hand, is a whole different ball game. You can beautiful, but being sexy means to be attractive, desirable, seductive, sensual , provocative, tempting and tantalizing like French underwear.
It has taken me years to be comfortable in my body , you see , I was chubby in my early twenties while all my friends were skinny or curvy , with lots of “assets” . I developed a complex, I wasn’t as well-endowed and for me dressing over sexy and showing the little I had, compensated for my lack of sexiness that these other girls naturally oozed. Many women it seems , try to keep up the same way but what works for Sandra doesn’t always work for Sally.[related_posts]
I quickly learned however, that sexinesscomes from within, you have to know, understand and love your body, it means dressing to suit your body shape, and after a lot of consulting ( one friend in particular , who is a make-up artist ,as well as well a decent sexy dresser and who I think is drop dead gorgeous ) I learnt that, every body type is beautiful and every type can change with age and weight loss or gain. Learning to dress the body you live in rightnow will help you look and feel most confident. Camouflaging, accentuating, highlighting, and balancing are the key. None of that over the top midriff baring , breast flashing , revealing stuff!
Ladies , Here are the different body shapes and how you can dress well and still be sexy by understanding your body :
The “Ruler “ Body Shape
The ruler body shape or rectangular shape is usually an athletic body type where the waist, hips and shoulder widths are slim and parallel to one another. This kind of girl doesn’t have to work to minimize but rather create more curves!
To mould a slender physique into a more curvy shape, focus on your middle area to create the illusion of fuller bust and hips. Always define the waist with a dress with a belt, or a blouse that drops below your waist.
Anything with adornment, pleats, and ruffles, add ladylike definition and boost your figure. Aim for bold patterns such as florals, stripes, or graphics, which will add depth and character to your silhouette.
The Kimmy K Shape
If you have a Kim Kardashian body shape, then your lower body is a bit wider than your upper body, with your hips widening more than your shoulders .
This figure should focus on emphasizing the waist, arms and shoulders in order to minimize focus from the hips. If this is the case for you, avoid flashy prints, which includes kitenge or cheetah skin prints just because it is in fashion doesn’t mean it’s for you ! Instead opt for sleek A-line skirts, wide hemmed pants, cropped jackets, and flowy dresses to balance out your sexy hips.
Strapless blouses show off your arms and upper torso, as well as square necklines. Try colour cutting, with light hued tops and darker bottoms to create a balancing contrast. Finish your look off with some pointy shoes to make your legs look longer.
The Inverted Pizza Slice shape
The Inverted Pizza slice shape features wide shoulders and a broader upper body, which is wider than the waist and hips.
If you have this body type, you should work to focus on your legs while feminizing the shoulders and upper body. In this case, you want to bring the focus downward to your narrow areas.
If you identify with the inverted pizza slice shape, then take advantage of those legs! Choose short to mid-thigh shorts and skirts while making sure to cover up your upper half with flowy blouses or tops.
Wide leg pants and full skirts also help to balance out your wider upper body. Do wear bright colors on your lower body (so no brightly coloured leggings or skirts), as well as items that call attention to your waistline, such as high waist trousers .Avoid spaghetti straps!!!!!
Hourglass Body Shape
Hourglass body shapes are characterized by similar bust and hip measurements, and a smaller waistline. The key to dressing well for an hourglass is to avoid going too baggy or too tight. You want to tastefully show off your curves without overdoing it.
In this case, you want to show off your bust with a v-neckline that will draw attention upward toward your bust and face. A wrap-around skirt or dress or belt at the waist will showcase your hourglass shape.
Make sure to wear skinny or straight leg pants, baggy jeans are horrible and look terrible on this kind of body shape! Look for slightly flared bottoms that balance out your hips. Mid-rise pants will help hide any extra tummy(mine is extra extra …), and low-rise jeans also work great (as long as you don’t go too low and scar others for life). Avoid high waists; they appear dowdy and one can easily be mistaken for being pregnant!
Whatever your body shape, you need to identify clothing styles that will fit best and be most naturally flattering to your figure. What looks good on others may not necessarily work for you and vice versa.
Remember the clothes maketh the man (or the woman in this case)
