One Sunday I failed to go to church for personal reasons and spent the Sunday morning at home. I am an Anglican and normally, I go to any nearby church of Uganda.
Since I had not gone for service, I decided to watch television for any religious program. Being a Sunday, most of the TV station has some of those paid for church services by different pentecostal churches.
I switched from one station to another looking for a message that would guide my day but never found what I was looking for. All the preachers had some common elements in their message.
They were all persuading viewers to go to their churches where all the demons in their lives, witchcraft, poverty and curses will suddenly disappear.
They all had testimonies where they would tell you who is bewitching you, who cursed you and who doesn’t wish you well and all kinds of negativity. They would promise you protection and deliverance once you become part of their church.
It felt like the pastors are trying to put their followers against the rest of the world.
They want to be looked at as the only source of wealth, confidence and peace which according to me is totally wrong.
This kind of preaching is why we have Christians fighting against one another and why sanity is disappearing from our communities.
I do not want to sound like someone who doesn’t believe in instant miracles, may be they do happen but I prefer to remain with my logical understanding of things.
To me, problems are solved with action, faith and patience and not some powerful words and just by a wave of pastor hand.
The belief that as a Christian, you need to be fighting frequently against demons and enemies eliminates the idea of eternal peace and the assurance that we are protected by the blood of Jesus.
As Christian, what we need to understand every one and be tolerant with all kinds of people.
The idea that other people are against us is hilarious in its self. Thinking that we need to curse and shout on top of our voices to keep ourselves is insane.
Our God is an all knowing God. What we need is faith in him and doing what he requires of us which; loving others like we love ourselves, being faithful to him and helping the poor.
In my opinion, Christianity should be the neutralizing factor, the calming fact when everything else is tensed.
We need the go back to the days when Christianity was looked at as a hiding place where love, tolerance, understanding and forgiveness were guaranteed.
If we still believe and read from the same bible that our grandfathers read from, we must understand that Christianity does not pay bad with bad and that it does not pay evil with evil.
We must convince ourselves that there is an overall God who can judge correctly all his people, we do not have to stain our own faith by constantly blackmailing someone else basing on the words of some selfish pastor.
Whoever invented Christian had done it in a way that the world could be united by that one word by that mystery belief that there is that one immortal God who can look into our hearts and judge us accordingly.
We should leave things that way, let God who looks inside hearts be the judge but not us.
That way, we will realize that the witchcraft, the haunting demons and all your problems were imaginary and illusionary.
We need to preach hope, love, faith, patience and forgiveness and stop politicizing religion.
