Everyone wants to have a successful professional career. But many have struggled to find a solution to that. If you’re planning on starting a career, there are things you need to know fore hand to have a successful one.
Here are 5 things you should know before you think of starting a professional career.
1. Just do it
Opportunities will come knocking on different occasions. Some will be scary that you’ll think of turning them down at first sight. But, when offered an opportunity, never turn it down – no matter how it scares the heck out of you. High risk opportunities oftentimes present the best rewards, so just do it.
There’s never going to be a moment when you feel like you’re ready for something. Just do it and even though you fail, you’ll keep the lessons and experience. But, you’ll have showed your employers that you’ve a can-do-spirit. That’s one of the things your employer will value most about you. Also, you won’t be successful at your career as long as you keep turning down opportunities.
2. Always ask for help
While doing your work, you’ll get stuck and the only way out might be a hand from a co-worker or outsider. Never shy away from asking for help. It has never been a sign of weakness – in fact it is a sign of strength.
Just imagine you spend a day working on something wrong yet if you had asked for help it would take you far less than that. You’re wasting your time, the employer’s time and of course money. So, whenever you feel like you need help, just ask for it and don’t forget to return the favor.
3. Value every person
As you start your career, you’ll meet many people along the way. Some will seem to matter more than others at certain times. But, don’t get lured into thinking of not valuing those that “don’t matter”. Every person that you’ll meet is a potential door to a new opportunity – in your career or personal life.
So you need to build good bridges as early as possible for you never know what the future holds.
4. Aim for promotion
There are scenarios of people who join a company at the same time but after a few years, they hold different positions. Same could happen to you just in case you do not set your targets as early as possible.
In fact, you’re setting yourself up for total failure as long as you don’t set your eyes on promotion. Of course the next step in your career may seem far, but this is the right time to prepare for it. So, take advantage of trainings and professional development courses. Or else even when the opportunity presents itself, you won’t be ready to take it.
5. Take criticism Positively
You have to accept that you don’t know everything and you can’t. You might fail to meet deadlines, repeat the same mistakes or something else. In all cases, your seniors will step in and give you guidance.
No one likes criticism, but my advice is that you take that criticism or feedback as though it is a gift. The person criticizing you only wants to make you better at what you do. People let the personality or the mode of criticism get in their way. My simple advice is – don’t concern yourself with any of that.
There are other things that you should consider before starting a professional career. But I consider these to be the foundation of all. For more details or comments about any of these, you can reach out to Peter Kisadha on or 0772628151.
