Education is the single most important thing anyone can have. We should always be learning, growing and discovering new things. Knowledge really is power and those of us who remain in willful ignorance will surely suffer as a result. But what are we doing to help those looking for information to find it?
The question quickly becomes what is the priority to teach. At the moment, efforts from NGOs and other medical organisations are focused around stemming the AIDS epidemic across the African continent, but will this give young people today the tools they’ll need to navigate tomorrow?
Messaging is muddled and messed up with religious subtext and in many cases overtly altered to fit a spiritual narrative that corrupts the facts that need to be taught. These pretexts can be dangerous for education. We, as humans, naturally seek out the truth. We’re curious animals and will continue to ask the hard questions of people feeding easy answers back.
Local cultural traditions around sex education ordinarily focus more around the sex behind the closed doors of marriage. What is lacking is the level of education about sex, reproduction and pleasure that is found elsewhere and dramatically reduces pregnancy rates among the young, the transmission of STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and improves young peoples’ understanding of sex.
The knowledge gap is in the young. Every study I’ve seen on sex education across Africa concludes that we need to teach more and teach younger so that the messages are clearly given and received so that they actually make a difference.
This blog is our humble attempt to make information more readily available but it is not, as yet, an adequate substitute for proper education in greater depth. So far, I have only discussed questions around the social and cultural nature of sex and we’ve not yet begun to really delve into the lessons of safe and rewarding sex in and of itself, perhaps with the exception of our post on the ‘69’ sex position.
The more questions you ask, the more you demonstrate that they need to be answered and more and more people like myself will arrive to help answer them. The more you search, the more readily available the answers will become.

Enjoy, and stay safe!
