The fun experience of being unemployed is short lived and it’s possible that your motivation will start to slip and you could find yourself spiraling into a vicious circle of unemployment despair. So, to help anyone who has found themselves out of work, we’ve put together some simple tips you can use to stay motivated whilst looking for a job.
Stay positive: Nothing lasts forever – and neither will your unemployment. Remember, enthusiasm and passion are strengths that employers look for when hiring, so do your best to stay positive. Don’t drag your feet, you need to keep moving in order to maintain your positivity, as once you start to stagnate you might find yourself unmotivated and procrastinating. Sometimes, even receiving a call back is enough to get you motivated again. Find out where your heart wants to be and put yourself there. A positive attitude can go a long way, especially when you start to interview.
Stick to a schedule: Motivation and positivity are great, but they can also be unreliable at times. Do yourself a favor and stick to a schedule to keep yourself disciplined. To start, make sure you get up at the same time each day, have your breakfast, brush your teeth, get dressed and be ready to start your job search. Make sure you plan how long you want to spend each day applying for jobs and how long you want to clean your house, workout etc. It can be as long as you want, as long as you schedule your time. The last thing you’ll want is to struggle to return to a routine when you do land a job. A disciplined mind is an excellent find.
Sharpen your skills & improve your knowledge: You can’t spend your whole day searching for jobs. For one, there might not be any new listings and two, you might lose your sanity. It might be worthwhile to consider learning a new skill or read up on industry news. Take a moment to schedule your learning in and do it. Maybe you could take an online course in your specialty, or you can take the opportunity to learn something new. Learning a new skill is a great way to keep your mind busy and will also reflect well in your resume.
Surround yourself with positive influences: There are two types of positive influences you want to surround yourself with – and they are both people. One set are particularly important if you’re unemployed and currently chasing your dream – avoid the “naysayers”. In most cases, naysayers aren’t malicious but they will try to encourage you on taking the safer path and avoiding risks. The other type of people are employed people. Surround yourself with employed people as they will have a positive influence on your motivation. Plus, if you’re lucky, you might find out about a job opening through one of your employed friends.
Hopefully our list will help you stay motivated during your job search. Make sure you use JumiaJobs to search for your next employment opportunity.
