In 1998 , a number of countries got together to celebrate entrepreneurship and the organisations that support them. Uganda was one of those founder countries for GEW. In 2017 , GEW celebrates ten years of existence. The global initiative has so far touched the lives of over 15 million entrepreneurs in over 165 countries. Activities take place simultaneously in the third week of November. Enterprise Uganda is the host country for Uganda and has so far signed up over 30 organisations that are expected to reach at least 200,000 people country wide.
“GEW is a time when we all get together to celebrate one of the most lonely yet productive person in the country, the entrepreneur” says Mrs. Mary Odongo , the GEW Uganda Manager. “We want to show the entrepreneur that they are not alone. We want to show the entrepreneur that they are appreciated.”
Uganda is the most entrepreneurial country in the world with a third of the population having tried their hand at business. However, it also has one of the highest failure rates in the country with less than 20% of all start-ups making it to their fifth year.
“The entrepreneur does not have to go it alone. GEW brings together in one room different organisations that support the entrepreneurs” explains Mr. Ronald Mukasa of Enterprise Uganda “Every year we have both public and private, profit and non-profit Business Development companies coming on board to showcase their services. Most times the entrepreneurs don’t know where to turn for help. GEW shines the light.”
This year’s celebrations will culminate in a one day workshop , open to the public at UMA showground Mulwana hall on 16th November 2017 .
