UGO Uganda’s had the chance to interact with DJ Tumz in a Q&A to get his opinion in regards to halloween, more especially this year’s party.
For those who might not know who DJ Tumz is, how do you want them to know and remember you?
DJ Tumz is a Rock DJ now based in Kenya. I’d like them to remember me as someone who rocked their world (literally).
We understand you are celebrating 10 years as a Rock DJ. What have been the pros, cons, and challenges of the profession?
Pros include creating a ‘new’ experience away from the cliche and seeing people embrace it. Having a loyal fanbase that has almost become like family (most of it).
Cons include misunderstanding/misconception of the genre. Some think that Rock music is ‘unAfrican’. Limited scope of gigs because of specialising on one genre (Rock).
Challenges – demystifying rock music
To someone who doesn’t understand how halloween fits in our African society, traditions and culture, what reason would you give them to celebrate this day?
For someone who doesn’t understand what Halloween is all about, they should consider it as an excuse to put on a costume and party. Why not??
In your opinion, do Africans embrace halloween like the Western world or are they are still hesitant?
I don’t think we are there yet. But Kampala as the party capital of East Africa is miles ahead in the region … in terms of Halloween.
Will there be a standard theme or anyone can choose their own theme, for the Ugandan party?
I think anyone can choose their own theme for the Uganda Halloween Party. Anyone can be whoever they want to be.
In regards to entertainment, what should we expect from this year’s halloween party?
Expect some good music and a great time. From me great Rock and some EDM.
