2017 has undoubtedly been the year of Cardi B, and that was even before she received nine nominations at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.
Will she win the MVP of the Year award? Find out when the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards premieres on Friday, 13 October at 21:00 on BET.
Now if you’ve been living under a rock and have no idea who Cardi B is, well, we’re here with the 411.
Who is Cardi B?
Born in New York City in 1992 (yes Cardi B is only 24-years-old), Cardi B’s birth name is Belcalis Almanzar. And like most millennial entertainers, Cardi B became an Internet celebrity before venturing into reality TV and a music career.
Cardi started releasing mixtapes last year, but it was the release of Bodak Yellow, that’s brought her to the attention of millions. The official music video for Bodak Yellow has already racked up more than 218 million views on YouTube.
Where else could we have seen her?
n 2015, Cardi B signed on to the reality show Love & Hip Hop: New York. Cardi was the breakout star on the series sixth season, with her popularity on the up and rising, as we followed her career and love life. And it was clear that her career was filled with musical notes, as she left the series at the end of the seventh season to pursue a music career.
Cardi also made an appearance on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians spin-off Kocktails with Khloe and starred as Mercedes on the BET show, Being Mary Jane.
Remember that episode where Mary Jane interviews a reality TV star and the two get in to a heated argument that’s recorded and goes viral? Yep, that was Cardi.
And Cardi’s love life?
On Love & Hip Hop: New York we followed the tribulations of Cardi’s love life with DJ Self.
These days, Cardi is dating one half of Migos, Offset. The couple took New York Fashion Week by storm, and they’ve even had to deny that they’ve become engaged.
What’s next for Cardi B?
The success of Cardi’s Bodak Yellow is monumental. By kicking Taylor Swift’s comeback track and Despacito out of the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100, Cardi became the first female rap star since Lauryn Hill in 1998, to hold the top spot. Once this happened, the congratulations from Missy Elliott, Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj came streaming in!
s
Janet Jackson mashed Bodak Yellow with What Have You Done For Me Latelyat one of her recent performances. And the song has already been featured on the soundtrack of one of our favourite series, Insecure.
The future is bright for Cardi B, and we can’t wait to see what she has planned next.
